Do you want to grow seriously great vegetables in your backyard? Are you finding that it’s a little harder than you thought to get your beloved seeds from their packets all the way to a super, plentiful harvest?

Join Michael Hewins, Milkwood's favourite market gardener, for two days of hands-on knowledge, tips and tricks on how to grow truly awesome backyard veggies using organic permaculture technique.

In this course you will learn:
•Vegetable garden design, placement and retrofitting
•Plant + soil relationships
•Applying strategies for a healthy soil food web in a backyard context
•Raising great seedlings
•Preparing garden beds for planting
•Nutrient cycling at backyard scale – worms, compost, compost teas
•Making fermented seaweed tea for your garden
•Developing garden schedules + crop rotations for backyard scale

Michael has a heap of experience in growing many types of annual vegetables in temperate and sub-tropical environments. He can help you get activated about taking your organic veggie production from zero to hero, using easy and effective nutrient cycling and soil building techniques that complement his years of experience with planting plans to ensure a bountiful harvest.

This class will be approximately half class time and half garden time, so arrive expecting to get your hands dirty!

You will leave this course with a competent working knowledge of how to either begin or immediately improve your veggie garden, as well as sample seeds and lots of course notes.

The majority of this course’s content applies to year-round growing for the greater Sydney region, with additional notes and tricks for planting and growing great veggies in Summer.

About your teacher

Michael Hewins is an organic market gardener with a background in permaculture, organic agriculture and horticulture and has a wide knowledge of how to grow high quality, healthy food.

He’s run his own Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) scheme in the northern rivers of NSW, worked as the market gardener at Milkwood Farm + farm manager at Common2Us Community Farm, and has a great working knowledge of organic vegetable growing in both temperate and subtropical environments.

About the venue

This course will be held in the workshop space adjoining the 107 Rooftop Garden in Redfern, Sydney.

The 107 Rooftop Garden is an inner-city food system full of vertical gardens, intensive veggie beds, aquaponics, beehives, dappled shady nooks and lots of hands-on opportunities to learn and grow good things.
